Replace the wear and failure prone final drive pivot bearings with this well engineered bushing upgrade kit. No modifications required, this bolt on kit improves ease of maintenance with the integrated grease fittings to ensure durability and long life. Fits where the swingarm attaches to the final drive on Paralever models.
The bushes are made from hard anodized, aircraft grade aluminum alloy for strength, and include copper bushes for longevity.
Follow factory shop manual for removal directions. Install new bushings in final drive housing. Housing can be heated and bushings chilled in a freezer for easier installation. Apply a thin film of moly lube to inside of bushings. Do not pack the bushing full of grease as this could cause the bushing cup to crack due to hydraulic lock as you tighten the adjuster pin. Torque the fixed pin to 80 Ft Lbs (108.2 Nm) with Blue Loctite #242 applied to threads.Tighten adjusting pin only until absence of free play, do not overtighten adjusting pin as this can cause binding and wear in bushing cup. Tighten locknut to 80 Ft Lbs (108.2 Nm) with blue Loctite #242 applied to threads. Use moly based chassis lube in your grease gun for future lubrication. Lube every 12,000 miles or sooner if desired. Only use supplied grease fittings for lubing the bushings, remove grease fittings and install supplied bolts after lubrication.
Installation of this Bearing Kit
FITTING ADVICE- Before refitting the bevel box onto the swing arm make sure that the baiter is in good condition. Ingress of water, salt and dirt can cause seizure and potentially dangerous failure of the bearing. Remember – these bearings hold the complete rear wheel assembly on the bike.
- Fitting of the female bearing to the bevel box is made easier and less likely to result in damage to the component if the bearing is cooled in a domestic freezer before fitting. This method can also be used on the pivots for their initial fitting to make them easier to tighten into the female side.
- Before fitting, lightly smear grease on the bearing surface of each pivot with the grease provided.
- DO NOT PACK THE BEARING WITH GREASE PRIOR TO ASSEMBLY AS THIS CAN CAUSE DIFFICULTY WITH CORRECT ASSEMBLY AND HYDRAULIC LOCK WHICH CAN BREAK THE BEARING CUP. After assembly the bearing can be greased as much as required using a grease gun without danger of causing damage.
- The pivot bolt (i.e. the pivot with the integral head) should be FITTED FIRST USING THREAD LOCK and tightened to the torque specified for your model. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. The pivot stud (i.e. the pivot with the lock nut) should be fitted after the pivot bolt, tightened GENTLY until it JUST bottoms out in the female half of the bearing and then slackened off by a quarter of a turn. Then tighten the lock nut, WITHOUT moving the pivot stud, to the specified toque for your model. Marking the pivot stud and a corresponding point on the swingarm helps to ensure that it hasn’t turned.
- Following assembly, use a grease-gun loaded with a multi-purpose grease to grease each pivot. As with the standard component, leaving the bearing ungreased can lead to seizure and potentially dangerous failure. When fitting the grease nipple and its brass extension only tighten this into the pivot by hand to avoid overtightening.
- Periodically grease the bearing at the service intervals specified for your machine. Service intervals for two valve R series & K100/1100 are every 5,000 miles or annually – whichever is soonest and R1100/1150/K1200 every 6,000 miles or annually – whichever is soonest and R1100/1150/K12500 every 6,000 miles or annually – whichever is soonest. Each pivot comes with a grease nipple fitting and a blanking bolt and washer, so greasing is a simple process. Use the blanking bolt on the road and only fit the grease nipple when servicing the bike. When fitting the grease nipple and its brass extension only tighten this into the pivot by hand to avoid overtightening. As with the standard component, leaving the bearing ungreased can lead to seizure and potentially dangerous failure.
