The following tables detail the component compatibility requirements for this Ignition System to function well:
Model Applicability / Component Compatibility
This EnDuraLast Electronic Ignition kit is designed for BMW Airhead motorcycles which have been upgraded to the EnDuraLast EDL4 Charging System. This kit is not designed for use with BMW motorcycles using the stock Bosch alternator. Different kits for these models are available from Euro MotoElectrics.
Please refer to Part # EDL-BOIGNS for retro fitment on the Bosch Alternator frame. This kit is designed for both stock single-plugged engines and engines which have been modified to add a second spark plug to each cylinder, “dual-plugged” engines.
Component Compatibility
Spark Plug Compatibility
The EnDuraLast Electronic ignition must be used with non-resistor plugs. NGK non-resistor plugs such as the BP6ES are known to work exceptionally well. Bosch has phased out their original non-resistor W5DC, W6DC and W7DC spark plugs and replaced them with WR5DC, WR6DC and WR7DC plugs, respectively. These are resistor plugs not compatible for this application. Currently, Bosch non-resistor spark plugs can only be purchased at BMW motorcycle dealers.
Spark Plug Cap Compatibility
The EnDuraLast Electronic ignition is compatible with only 5K ohm spark plug caps. Points ignition airheads more thank likely will need to changer their original 1K ohm caps. Note that points ignition can use 5K ohm caps with no issue. Which means you can leave the original points installed, and electrically disconnected at the coil so a full secondary ignition system can be left in place as a backup, or to maintain the bikes originality. Transistorized ignition airheads with a HALL sensor equipped timing pickup should be able to reuse their caps that originally came on the motorcycle.
Coil Compatibility
The EnDuraLast Electronic ignition is compatible with all stock BMW ignition coils used on models using points and condensers. Specifically, the EnDuraLast can be used with ignition coils that have a primary resistance seen by the electronics between 2.5 -3.2 ohms. Since both stock Airheads and dual-plugged Airheads use two coils wired in series, each of these coils needs a primary resistance of 1.25 to 1.6 ohms.
It is NOT compatible with conventional dual tower BOSCH ignition coils which are stock on transistorized ignition airheads, which typically have a primary resistance of around .7 ohms. These coils will cause a random shutdown of the system. Typically the module will reset once power is cycled however permanent damage can be caused.
Battery Compatibility
The EnDuraLast Electronic ignition can be used with any battery source that will supply steady voltage from 12-14.6 volts.
